Vote with your dollars! There are many, many companies that are making baby safe products. What goes on your skin goes in your skin! I really like are Weleda and Earth Mama Baby Angel, both widely available at Whole Foods, Amazon.com and many other retailers. If you have questions whether the products you are using on your children are safe you can look up the products and ingredients on safecosmetics.org & www.ewg.org/skindeep.
" Two chemicals considered harmful to babies remain in Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo sold in the U.S., even though the company already makes versions without them, according to a coalition of health and environmental groups."
I've been on the hunt for non-toxic Face Paint, back in September my husband and I were in Whole Foods asking if they were going to be carrying any for the Halloween season and they said they have had a very hard time sourcing a lead-free non-toxic product. The lack of safe products was confirmed by testing by the Ecology Centre.
"Every single product contained traces of some kind of metal, but that is just the beginning. More than half of the products contained cadmium, a toxic heavy metal linked to cancer, birth defects and brain damage. Other toxic metals like mercury and lead were also detected."
"A May 2011 study by Environmental Defence (Canada) of adult cosmetics also found that 100 percent of the 49 cosmetics tested were contaminated with hazardous metals."
One more thing you should not have to worry about is whether or not your child's car seat toxin free.
Testing by HealthyStuff.org has revealed that over 60% of car seats tests contained hazardous flame retardants and chemical additives with links to allergies, impaired learning, and cancer.
I've just come across another great tool, thanks to the Pesticide Action Network, that helps inform on why choosing organics and being aware of where your food comes from is a must!
I just did a quick scan of butter (conventional vs organic). The conventional butter, when analyzed, had the residue of 10 different pesticides. Now if these pesticides are supposed to be toxic (most of them neurotoxins) to insects, exactly what effects are are then having on infants and young developing children?
Some healthy, fantastic news from Environmental Defence that is positive for all Canadians. Effective October 12th 2010, BPA has been designated as a toxic substance in Canada! This is the first step (of many) to banning it in Canada.
Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence, says that in working with the federal government " The next important step (is) banning BPA from all metal food and beverage cans since these can leach it into our food.”
BPA, or Bisphenol-A is an endocrine disruptor and has no business being in anything we consume, be that what we eat (food packaging), drink (pop-cans, food can lining, plastic bottles, plastic coffee drink lids) or use on our skin or hair. The Environmental Defense Canada has done an amazing job in educating the public and officials in the hazards of this chemical! Let's continue to support their work and tell our MP's and MPP's that as Canadians we must have zero tolerance when it comes to allowing toxic chemicals into our food and water supply!
What can you do today:
Contact your MP and MPP and tell them that you support the banning of BPA from all metal food and beverage cans.
The white blood cells need folic acids, Vitamin B12 and Zinc (to name a few) to do battle effectively. Zinc is needed for well over 100 enzyme reaction.
We also need zinc to make HCL (hydrochloric acid) in the stomach and important enzymes like carbonic anhydrase. Having these enzymatic reaction functioning properly has far reaching effects ranging from pain reduction, proper digestion to reducing depression.
Associated Conditions with low zinc:
Decreased taste and sense of smell
decreased immunity
free radical damage / oxidation
low libido
low sperm counts
tooth decay
poor adrenal function / stress response
depression, anxiety
low thyroid activity
poor fetal growth
poor hair growth
poor wound healing
easily broken nails / white spots on nails.
To find out if your zinc is low, you can ask your health care practioner to do an easy Zinc Tally or Sufficiency Test. This test involves swishing 10ml of a zinc sulphate solution in your mouth for 20 seconds, if the solutions tastes like water this indicates that you are zinc deficient. You will know your levels are up when you re-take the test and the solution has a strong metallic taste.
To replete your zinc levels a liquid zinc sulphate solution is recommended until you start tasting the solution and then you can continue to use a zinc capsule. Absorption of zinc is decreased by fiber and food, as it competes with binding sites with calcium and magnesium. Best to be taken on an empty stomach or with a small amount of food.
Eating just one brazil nut a day supplies 100% RDA of selenium. Selenium plays a vital role in boosting the immune system and promoting the synthesis of glutathione, minimizing free radical damage. If you're wondering about your nutrient status you can assess your levels through a Hair Mineral Analysis or Red Blood Cell Elements. These tests screen for up to 60 essential elements and toxic metals and can be ordered through your naturopathic doctor.
(Summary from Journal Watch) Infants exclusively breast-fed for 6 months have fewer and less severe infections their first year of life, according to a study published in the September 2010 issue of Archives of Disease in Childhood.
Researchers interviewed roughly 900 new mothers in Crete throughout the infants' first year to assess breast-feeding habits and the infants' health. Overall, infants exclusively breast-fed had 0.7 fewer infections in their first year than infants with partial or no breast-feeding. Mothers who exclusively breast-fed their infants for at least 6 months reported fewer doctor visits for acute otitis media, acute respiratory infection, and thrush. In addition, hospital admissions for infection were lower in breast-fed babies.
Asked to comment, Dr. F. Bruder Stapleton of Journal Watch Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine said, "These data confirm once again the value of exclusive breast feeding on the health of infants in the first 6 months of life."

The Fall is great time to look locally for farm fresh fruits and vegetables at a road-side stand or Farmer's Market. My great friend and colleague Dr. Janice Davie ND just brought my attention to a video that highlights just home much fresh produce we import. Check it out!
Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) is a method of assessing your “body composition”— the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass. It is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment.
Why Is Body Composition Important to My Health?
Body composition is directly related to health. A normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity. Excess fat in relation to lean body mass, known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your risks to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more. BIA fosters early detection of an improper balance in your body composition, which allows for earlier intervention and prevention.
BIA provides a measurement of fluid and body mass that can be a critical assessment tool for your current state of health. BIA also measures your progress as you improve your health. Improving your BIA measurement, or maintaining a healthy BIA measurement, can help keep your body functioning properly for healthy aging. Your BIA results can help guide us in creating a personalized dietary plan, including nutritional supplements when appropriate, and exercise to help you maintain optimal health and well-being for a lifetime.
How Does a BIA Work?
BIA is much more sophisticated than your bathroom scale, but just as simple — and almost as quick. BIA is performed in our office with the help of a sophisticated, computerized analysis. This analyzer “calculates” and estimates your tissue and fluid compartments—using an imperceptible electrical current passed through pads placed on your hand and foot as you lie comfortably clothed on an exam table. In just minutes, we’ll have detailed measurements to help create an effective, personalized program for you.
According to a new report from the President's Cancer Panel, environmental toxins play a significant and under-recognized role in cancer, causing "grievous harm" to untold numbers of people. EWG's own research has found that children are born "pre-polluted" with nearly 300 industrial chemicals, pesticides and contaminants that have been found to cause cancer in lab studies or in people.
Four of every 10 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and two of every 10 will die from it. Beyond talking to your doctor about lifestyle changes that are known to make a difference -- stopping smoking, reducing drinking, losing weight, exercising and eating right -- there are things you can do to reduce your risk.
Here are some simple ways you can reduce your exposure to potentially cancer-causing chemicals (click here to download the PDF):
1. Filter your tap water. Common carcinogens in tap water include arsenic, chromium, and chemical byproducts that form when water is disinfected. A simple carbon tap-mounted filter or pitcher can help reduce the levels of some of these contaminants. If your water is polluted with arsenic or chromium, a reverse osmosis filter will help. Learn about your tap water and home water filters at EWG's National Tap Water Database.
2. Seal outdoor wooden decks and play sets. Those built before 2005 are likely coated with an arsenic pesticide that can stick to hands and clothing. Learn more from EWG.
3. Cut down on stain- and grease-proofing chemicals. "Fluorochemicals" related to Teflon and Scotchgard are used in stain repellants on carpets and couches and in greaseproof coatings for packaged and fast foods. To avoid them, avoid greasy packaged foods and say no to optional stain treatments in the home. Download EWG's Guide to PFCs.
4. Stay safe in the sun. More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. To protect your skin from the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) radiation, seek shade, wear protective clothing and use a safe and effective sunscreen from EWG's sunscreen database.
5. Cut down on fatty meat and high-fat dairy products. Long-lasting cancer-causing pollutants like dioxins and PCBs accumulate in the food chain and concentrate in animal fat.
6. Eat EWG's Clean 15. Many pesticides have been linked to cancer. Eating from EWG's Clean 15 list of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables will help cut your pesticide exposures. (And for EWG's Dirty Dozen, buy organic.) Learn more at EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides.
7. Cut your exposures to BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen found in some hard plastic water bottles, canned infant formula, and canned foods. Some of these chemicals cause cancer in lab studies. To avoid them, eat fewer canned foods, breast feed your baby or use powdered formula, and choose water bottles free of BPA. Get EWG's tips to avoid it.
8. Avoid carcinogens in cosmetics. Use EWG's Skin Deep cosmetic database to find products free of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer. When you're shopping, don't buy products that list ingredients with "PEG" or "-eth" in their name.
9. Read the warnings. Some products list warnings of cancer risks -- read the label before you buy. Californians will see a "Proposition 65" warning label on products that contain chemicals the state has identified as cancer-causing.
Spring is a great time of the year to give your body a break with a Detox.
Eat a low allergen diet filled with fruits and veggies (organics are best). Try my Top 10 for a 10 day easy Detox.
Put Down the Processed Foods: Read food labels, if you don't know what it is, don't eat it!
Eliminate Allergens: Remove foods from your diet that are both difficult to digest and common allergensor suspected allergens (specific to you): red meat, dairy, soy, corn, eggs, wheat and gluten containing grains.
Slow down on Sugar: Refined sugar decreases your liver's ability to detoxify toxins.
Bring on the Brassicas: Brassica veggies include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bok choy, High in Indole-3-carbinol, a phytochemical that promotes liver detoxification. Aim for 2 cups / day green vegetables including the brassica's. Green vegetables high are also high in chlorophyll which will also increases the dumping of fat soluble toxins into bile and ultimately from the bosy.
Eat your Antioxidants: Aim for 1 Tbsp / day tomato paste and 1 - 2 cups / day dark berries.
Power on the Protein: Many of the biochemical detoxification pathways in the liver are protein dependent and will slow down with out adequate protein. Try a breakfast shake made with vegan protein powder (brown rice, pea or hemp) blended with frozen berries and coconut milk. My current favourite protein powder is Garden of Life Raw Protein and I also really like Thorne's Mediclear Detox Shake (protein with added detox nutrients).
Fill up on Fiber: Fiber keeps the bowels moving and traps fat soluble toxins that are being excreted with bile into the small intestine. Aim for 2 Tbsp / day of Psyllium or Organic Rice Bran Fiber (Organic Traditions). Fiber can be added to your meals and shakes throughout the day.
Take Time for Tea: Green tea contains anti oxidants, protective against all causes of cancer and helps rid the body of fat soluble toxins through bile. My favourites are Rose Mountain Herb's Organic Houjicha, Jasmine Pearls, Genmaicha and Do Matcha (nice added to a shake). Aim for 2 - 4 cups / day
Just add Water: Flushes unwanted toxins, keeps your brain sharp! Aim for 1.5 to 2L / day (You can count your tea in this amount).
Loving Lemons: Lemons are amazing at improving the alkalinity of your body. A huge benefit of alkalinity if the more alkaline your urine is (pH 6.8-7.0), the more water soluble toxins your kidney is able to flush out and more Magnesium is spared. Other ways to improve alkalinity: Green vegetables, other citrus, buffered vitamin C. You can check the alkalinity of your urine by testing your urine throughout the day with pH paper purchased from a health food or drug store.
Sweat it out: 30min of exercise a day will help to begin mobilizing fat soluble toxins. Aim for 15 to 30min a day during your 10 day detox. If you have access to a sauna this will enhance your body's ability to sweat! I really like Sauna-ray's Infra-red saunas. Saunas are great, but any way that you are challenging your body to sweat will provide benefits including hot yoga and other cardio exercise!!
This is a must-watch documentary that will give you (and definitely gave me) insights on where our food comes from, how it is processed and how we can make healthier, more ethical food choices for our families, our communities and the planet.

Dennis Wolverton at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has done studies over the past two decades to find out which plants could remove toxic chemicals from the air for use in space stations.
The plants that topped his list are:
- Mass cane (dracaena massangeana)
- Pot mum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)
- Gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)
- Warnecki (Dracaena deremensis “Warneckei”)
- Ficus (Ficus benjamina)
These five plants were particularly effective at clearing the air of formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. Common household sources of these toxins include new carpets, new furniture and mattresses, and press board furniture.

Dr. Crinnion ND, an expert in environmental medicine and author of Clean, Green and Lean, refers to these plants as "Nature's Air Purifiers" and recommends putting LOTS of them in your home or workplace. By using a variety of these plants and "making your home a jungle" you'll have dramatically improved the air quality of your home.

I was deeply disturbed and troubled as it reinforced the amount of chemicals we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Among these thousands of chemicals (85% of which are untested on humans) are bisphenol-A and Phthalates. Although many products containing bisphenol-A have been pulled from from the shelves (baby bottles, water bottles) there are many more products that we use every days that contains this endocrine disrupting chemical including the lining in canned food and canned soft drinks. Health Canada Reports that Phthalates “are hazardous to reproduction and development". Phthalates are in soft plastics and cosmetics in everything from bugs sprays, children's glow sticks, dentures, clothing, automobiles (part of the odour of new cars) and polyvinyl chloride products, the plastic often used in building materials such as pipes.
Health Canada is proposing regulations to prevent the use of six phthalates (DEHP, DINP, DBP, BBP, DNOP and DIDP) in soft vinyl children's toys and child-care articles. Which will bring Canada's regulation closer to that of the European Union. This past week however, the Globe and Mail reported that:
Health Canada's proposed regulation doesn't go far enough because exposures to chemicals that disrupt hormones are most dangerous during fetal development. Pregnant women were not covered by Health Canada's proposed measurers. The federal agency was not immediately able to respond to questions on why it didn't include restrictions on products used by adults.
There are more than 20 heavily industrialized nations where the birth of baby boys has declined every year for the past 30 years - amounting to 3 million fewer baby boys.
The number of boys born with penis abnormalities and genital defects has increased by 200% in the past two decades.
Boys have a higher incidence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, Tourett's syndrome, cerebral palsy and dyslexia.
Boys are four times as likely to be autistic.
The average sperm count of a North American college student today is less than half of what it was 50 years ago.
The quality of sperm is declining. Eighty-five per cent of the sperm produced by a healthy male is DNA-damaged.
Damaged sperm have been linked to a 300% increase in testicular cancer - a form of cancer that affects young men in their 20s and 30s.
The chemical industry has developed more than 90,000 man-made chemicals in the last sixty years. Eighty-five percent of them have never undergone testing for their impact on the human body.
