Health Tips - Cold and Flu

1. To fight off a cold or flu use warming socks. Get a knee-high pair of cotton socks and a pair of wool socks. Soak the cotton socks in cold water, wring them out and then put them on your feet. Put the wool socks on top and then go to bed. The body will respond by warming the feet, thus draining the congestion from the head.

2. When you are coming down with a cold or the flu get plenty of rest and relaxation. Allow time for your body to heal. Eat warm, cooked food and drink plenty of warm liquids. Avoid dairy and sugar.

3. To reduce a fever drink a couple of glasses of water, apply cold wet compress to the forehead and chest and take a long tepid bath or sponge bath. Rest, drink plenty of fluids and limit food intake until the fever breaks. Fevers below 39C (102F) are seen as “friendly” and a reaction of the body to eliminate toxins.
Remember: fevers are one of the most important defenses our body has against disease. The intention of a fever is to raise the temperature of the body to create uncomfortable living conditions for bacteria and viruses (i.e. “to cook the bugs”).
In order to build a healthy and strong immune system, it is extremely important to support the body’s natural immune defenses – fevers should be encouraged, not suppressed.

4. To aid the elimination of toxins through the skin induce perspiration by taking long hot baths, using an infrared sauna or steam room. Increasing perspiration through the skin is one of the safest and most effective ways of eliminating toxins.

Cold & Flu: Warming Socks for stuffy nose & congestion

Warming Socks / Wet Socks is a simple home Hydrotherapy treatment that will decrease stuffed up sinuses and congestion in your head and chest.

What you'll need:
  • Thin pair of cotton socks, ankle height.
  • Thick pair of wool socks (if you don't have wool available a wicking hiking sock can be substituted)
Method:
  1. Get ready for bed.
  2. Soak cotton socks in cold water. Wring out well, so they are not dripping.
  3. Put on wet cotton socks.
  4. Place a thicker pair of wool socks on top of your wet cotton of socks. Your feet will start to warm up immediately.
  5. Go straight to bed and leave socks on overnight. They will be dry in the morning - and your congestion will be greatly decreased.
  6. For best results try this for 3 nights in a row.
  7. (Optional - if your feet are really cold before this treatment, soak your feet in warm water for 5-10 min, dry off and then go to Step #2)

How does this work?

This simple home treatment works by increasing blood circulation, increasing your immune system and deceasing congestion in the upper respiratory tract, head and throat.

By increasing blood circulation to your feet this simple home treatment works to drain congestion from your head. As your body concentrates on warming your feet and more blood moves to your feet, and away from you upper body.

As your body works to warm your feet you will be surprised at how quickly your warm-up and the socks dry out.

If you are also suffering from a cough, I use a product called "Nin Jiom" natural cough syrup. This is a molasses-type of cough medicine that is made from several herbs that help with coughs. It is very sweet tasting and inexpensive to purchase. You can find this at most health food stores, and drug stores.

Detox your Diet: Why I love garlic...

Garlic is widely used around the world for its pungent flavor as a seasoning or condiment. But many do not know that garlic can be used medicinally as well.

Studies have shown that garlic, especially aged garlic, can have a powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidants can help to protect the body against damaging free radicals. Furthermore, garlic also contains a medicinal component called, allicin. Allicin is the most powerful medicinal compound derived from garlic and provides the greatest health benefits.

Allicin is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect. Allicin has antibiotic properties, is an excellent anti-fungal, can treat an upper respiratory tract infection, can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and can promote a healthy heart.

The problem with allicin produced by being finely chopped or crushed, is that it starts to degrade immediately after it is produced, so its medical effectiveness decreases over time. Cooking speeds up this degradation and microwaving appears to destroy allicin totally and eliminate any health benefits.

*So for the most powerful medicinal effect, crush a little raw garlic and combine with the cooked food shortly before serving.
